We are and
what we do
Kim, Danielle and Amber work to blend their experience and tastes to cultivate a stylish atmosphere and exceptional end result.
is Changes Cutting Studio located?
On the Aurora street side of The Commons, between Just a Taste and Asia Cusine...
Changes was established downtown in the mid-80’s, was run out of a storefront on East State street until 1997, and currently occupies a second-floor loft on Aurora street, on the the east end of the Ithaca Commons. Run originally by Lenny Randall, the business has been in the hands of Kim Sherwood Caso since 1991, during which time Changes has become a fixture of Ithaca’s business community.
Changes was conceived as a place to celebrate and support local music and art. The environment Kim and her staff have created is laid-back and funky, yet professional. Your ideas about looks and aesthetics are welcomed and appreciated, and time is taken to make sure you get the haircut you came for. With thirty or forty-five minute appointments, and colors lasting one to two hours, this is a place to relax and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows, rotating exhibits on the walls, music, and conversation.
Changes attracts to its intimate space a diverse clientele, from high school students to Cornell and Ithaca College faculty, local farmworkers and musicians as well as elected officials and technology and business people. At Changes, you get more than a ready-made, cookie-cutter style. You get the chance to have a personal exchange with your hairdresser.
We believe that Aveda offers the best to our clients, and we use them exclusively. Before you sit in the chair, you’ll have a stress-relieving shampoo and scalp massage, and the stylists are well-versed in the use of Aveda products. Should you want to take some home, men’s and women’s shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments and styling products are available to purchase.
Kim Sherwood Caso
Kim has been cutting hair for more than twenty years. Her skill, combined with her practical salon experience and knowledge of Aveda products, methods, and philosophy, make Kim one of the most sought-after stylists in the region. She pays meticulous attention to detail and takes the time to accommodate every client’s style, be it a classic look or edgy punk rock.
She apprenticed under Lenny Randall, the previous owner of Changes, and continues her professional development with Aveda Current Trends classes in Geneva and New York City.
Kim is an Ithaca native and the mother of two. Outside of work, she can be found at local art shows, films, in her garden, or performing at the Chapter House, Castaways, Felicia’s and other Ithaca music venues - she has, in fact, played professionally since 1991, and has toured extensively in the U.S. and abroad.
Danielle Kearns lives a life devoted to creating. She realized the potential of her ability to design hair in 2006.
Drawing inspiration from the world around her, she uses color and innovative haircuts as her medium.
Foundational styling begins with knowing her clients through a strong consultation. She specializes in creative color, custom haircuts, wedding, updo's and editorial styling.
Passionately devoting herself to the art of living, when not behind the chair she can be found on the stage. As a dancer and seamstress her affection for the creative process is the driving force in her artistry. In the spirit of classical hairdressing, she launched Adorn, custom hair jewelry and accessories for all occasions.
With over 7 years of professional experience, designing hair has always been a passion for Amber. Working with all hair types, learning new and different ways of cutting, coloring and styling is more than just a job for her, it's fun.
Amber believes that following the latest trends is important and enjoys learning how to recreate them. There is nothing more exciting than a challenge, like how to combine a "famous" look with yours and making it your own.
Her services range from long hair to short, edgy cuts, layers and blunt cuts, wedding hair, and updos. Amber specializes in different coloring and highlighting techniques, such as ombré.
As a new mother, her nurturing side plays a big part in her consultations. Taking time to make sure she knows exactly what you want, while giving her own professional input is her approach. When Amber is not at work she is exploring nature and tending her new garden.
"I think the most important thing a women can have -next to talent, of course- is her hairdresser" -Joan Crawford
The Aveda Way
Aveda, sold exclusively at Changes, is equally committed to the individual's natural beauty and that of the planet. This mission of sustainability and cosmetology is right at home in Ithaca and at Changes. "We use Aveda products because we believe in their philosophy," Kim comments. "They are committed to being 'Green' while remaining abreast of the cutting edge trends in fashion."
Founded in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher, Aveda was one of the first beauty companies to endorse a set of environmental principles designed to encourage greater environmental responsibility in business known as The Ceres Principles. These principles (www.ceres.org) addressed sustainability challenges such as global climate change.
In addition to Aveda's fashion commitments, the company has pledged itself to take responsibility for its environmental impact. Aveda's Soil to Bottle traceability system allows the corporation to follow and document the precise origin of their essential oils. It has partnered with farmers in South America to draw from the earth's natural resources while spotlighting areas in need of international media and business attention.
Conveniently located in downtown Ithaca, Changes is on Aurora Street, near the east end of the Ithaca Commons. Between the much lauded Just a Taste Restaurant, and the popular Asia Cusine, the entrance to Changes is just a buzzer entrance and a flight of stairs away.
Changes is one of the few remaining hair salons on The Ithaca Commons. Committed to downtown Ithaca as a cultural and business center, Changes has not resisted decamping among big box stores or long car rides away.
Changes is open Monday through Friday from 10am-5pm by appointment only. Please call 607-272-0090 to schedule an appointment!
